AI Applications in Manufacturing with NDSU’s Dr. Harun Pirim

AI Applications in the Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing companies need to offer customized products while utilizing low costs and reducing time-to-market to remain competitive in a globalized world. Dealing with high complexity, dynamic production conditions, and unpredictable markets is essential for success. It is suggested that by providing precise and timely decision-making support, machine learning (ML)-aided production planning and control (PPC) can help address these issues. Moreover, the use of machine learning leverages supply chain operations, optimizing various aspects of the supply chain, such as supplier selection, supplier segmentation, supply chain risk prediction, demand estimation, inventory management, transportation, sustainable development, and the circular economy.

This presentation is a high-level introduction to modern AI applications in the manufacturing industry. ML use cases will be reviewed. Some examples include:

  • efficient inspection and monitoring of products throughout the production process,

  • predictive maintenance to reduce downtime and increase productivity,

  • predicting demand, and optimizing inventory levels, as well as analyzing sensor data and optimizing process parameters,

  • generative design, and

  • streamlined paperwork.

The future of AI applications in the manufacturing industry will be discussed, exploring the potential of ML to transform the organization and management of manufacturing operations, as well as enhance customer satisfaction. Large language models such as ChatGPT4 and their integration into operations will be showcased. A possible hands-on workshop to apply some of the ML techniques on relevant datasets will be offered later based on demand.

Drekker - Brewhalla: Minn-Dak Social

Please join Minn-Dak Manufacturers Association for a membership social at Drekker Brewing Co. - Brewhalla at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17. Pizza will be catered and can be enjoyed with drinks before the tour, beginning at 4 p.m., or after the tour, until 6:30 p.m. Dinner/drinks are provided for MDMA Paid Members or can be purchased by non-MDMA members for $15. Please select the correct ticket type.

Beer is our craft, but Drekker is about more than the contents of a glass. It’s about what happens when a few of those glasses get raised together. It’s about doing what you want to do, in a cool place, with people you want to be with. Drekker is about you after all. We love that you’d care enough to join us, and we can’t wait to see where this voyage goes when a couple more beers get raised together. Valhalla can wait.

We started as many breweries do; just a couple of friends brewing in a garage who loved great beer, had a crazy dream, and worked their asses off to make it come true. We won’t bore you with some long, meandering story about how we all met, or how the stars aligned for the brewery to come together. If you want to know the whole story, we’ll bore you with it in the taproom or just wait for the Lifetime movie to come out. Really, we’re just four regular guys who are serious about beer and not much else.

Since then, Don dabbled in home brewing, and he even began growing his own hops in his backyard. He talked off and on for a couple of years about what it would be like to open a brewery of his own until one day in the spring of 2015, his wife finally said, "either do it or stop talking about it!" So, he did!
