AI Applications in Manufacturing with NDSU’s Dr. Harun Pirim

AI Applications in the Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing companies need to offer customized products while utilizing low costs and reducing time-to-market to remain competitive in a globalized world. Dealing with high complexity, dynamic production conditions, and unpredictable markets is essential for success. It is suggested that by providing precise and timely decision-making support, machine learning (ML)-aided production planning and control (PPC) can help address these issues. Moreover, the use of machine learning leverages supply chain operations, optimizing various aspects of the supply chain, such as supplier selection, supplier segmentation, supply chain risk prediction, demand estimation, inventory management, transportation, sustainable development, and the circular economy.

This presentation is a high-level introduction to modern AI applications in the manufacturing industry. ML use cases will be reviewed. Some examples include:

  • efficient inspection and monitoring of products throughout the production process,

  • predictive maintenance to reduce downtime and increase productivity,

  • predicting demand, and optimizing inventory levels, as well as analyzing sensor data and optimizing process parameters,

  • generative design, and

  • streamlined paperwork.

The future of AI applications in the manufacturing industry will be discussed, exploring the potential of ML to transform the organization and management of manufacturing operations, as well as enhance customer satisfaction. Large language models such as ChatGPT4 and their integration into operations will be showcased. A possible hands-on workshop to apply some of the ML techniques on relevant datasets will be offered later based on demand.
